Bonds on #714 Baseball

Barry Bonds

The hullabaloo over Barry Bonds hitting his 714th career home run and tying Babe Ruth is now over. This will only lead to even more build up for him passing Ruth and moving into second place all alone, but not here at Sports Underground. I only want to point out, as I like to do every chance I get, what a classless act Barry Bonds is and will continue to be. A 19 year old young man named Tyler Snyder was the person who caught Bond’s homer yesterday in Oakland. Snyder quickly left the game with his souvenir because I’m sure he was worried about someone attempting to take the record tying ball. When Bonds was told Snyder is an A’s fan, he cracked back with: “I, um, forgive you. If he doesn’t like me, give me the ball.” Another wonderful example that Barry Bonds is the equivalence of pond scum!

Barbaro Injured at Preakness

barbaroAs an animal lover, it breaks my heart every time I see the video of Barbaro breaking his leg on Sat. during his attempt to win the second leg of the Triple Crown. The leg was broken in two places, both above and below the ankle on the right rear leg. As it looks now, the injury may be severe enough that it could be life threatening, depending on whether or not the blood flow to that leg has been permanently damaged. I certainly hope that’s not the case. What is certain is that Barbaro has run his last race. Previously undefeated, he will no longer be able to race and the trainers and vets are saying that a best case scenario is to use him to breed other horses. The injury cast a long shadow over the winner of the Preakness, Bernardini. We will keep you updated on Barbaro’s status.

Earth to Jason Terry

Jason Terry
I have no idea why Jason Terry and the Mavericks are upset about his suspension for Game 6 against the Spurs. I mean his punch to Michael Finley’s jewels with 3.4 seconds left in their 98-97 loss to San Antonio was blatant and aggregious. Mark Cuban has even come out and made statements that it’s not right and fair and I just don’t get it. I know it has to do in part with Reggie Evans squashing Chris Kaman’s cuyongas earlier in the playoffs, but that was not nearly as evident as this incident. Don’t get me wrong, I really respect Cuban, but he has to know this was going to get a suspension and deservedly so. Let him serve his time and he will be back for game 7. These actions should always be treated in this manner.

Los Angeles Clippers Live to See Another Day

The Staples Center was in an uproar last night watching their Los Angeles Clippers play solid basketball against the Phoenix Suns in a 118-106 win. Elton Brand dropped 30 points and grabbed 12 rebounds along with a solid performance from Cory Maggette adding 25 points.  Los Angeles ClippersThis is uncharted territory for the Clips, but they seem ready and willing to take it on. I want to be clear when I say if the Clippers truly want to make the Western Conference Finals they need to make sure Brand, Kaman and other BIGS play their heart out. This is how the Suns can be beat and probably the only way they will be in Phoenix.

Bright Future For The Saints

With the NFL season still 4 months away, the New Orleans Saints have broken all their season ticket sales records for the 2006-07 season. But is there a reason for the city to be so optimistic? We think so. First of all, they have a new head coach, Sean Payton, who is coming to them from Dallas where he learned all the head coaching tricks and techniques from Bill Parcells. Let’s not forget, Payton was the offensive coordinator for the NY Giants and helped lead them to a Super Bowl.

Second, they went out and got a GOOD QB. Now, how soon Drew Brees recovers from his shoulder injury could impact the season, especially if its weeks and weeks that he misses. Brees has had a stellar couple of years recently, and fully intends to continue that trend in the Big Easy.

Finally, Reggie Bush. Need I say more? Arguably the most “electrifying” player in the 2006 draft (I’m still betting on Super Mario making a big splash) is coming to town to try and help rebuild a franchise and perhaps a city. He has skills, S-K-I-L-L-S, and personality. Bush brings excitement and a winning attitude, something he probably picked up during his days with the Trojans.

With more than a few dark days in recent history, both on the field and off, the Saints actually have a reason to think tomorrow may be better than yesterday. Same goes for the city itself.

Pistons Stunned

cavsWhat seemed to be a series that the Pistons had in easily in control, has turned into an uphill battle for them. After winning the first two in the series, the Pistons have now dropped 3 straight, with the latest tonight IN Detroit. Cleveland led the majority of the game, and while the Pistons gave them a good run down the stretch, the Cavs were able to hold them off. LeBron had a big game,Pistons but pushed the action a little too much going down to the wire. That is, until he decided to draw the defense and then drop the ball off to Gooden, who made the easy layup and put Cleveland up for good. Rasheed Wallace, for the second game, had an off game. Maybe he is still hungover from his Game 4 guarantee. Either way, the Cavs are headed back to Cleveland with a one game lead, and the possibility of advancing to the Eastern Conference Finals with a win. Detroit was expected to teach the young Cavs a lesson, and everyone thought they would walk right over them, but that’s why they play the game.

World Record DOH

Grease lightning Justin Gatlin did not set the new World 100-meter record last weekend as first reported. Due to a timing error it has now been established that he tied the 9.77 second record set by Jamaican Asafa Powell. I think it’s absolutely hysterical they figured this out basically four days later. Isn’t this based on people running from one line to the next and a digital clock…geesh!!! It won’t be long though and this speed battle could be settled. Gatlin and Powell face next in the Prefontaine Classic on May 28th and again in a huge dollar event at the Norwich British Union Grand Prix on June 11th. I only ask we get some proper watches and timekeepers for these events. Thanks!

  • The World’s Largest Cocktail Party has become just another, average, everyday get together. Or so the NCAA would like it to be viewed. The annual meeting between Florida and Georgia has been known as the World’s Largest Cocktail Party since the 50’s, but two recent deaths at the event has prompted officials and the NCAA to try and remove the title from the game. Removing the fun and atmosphere from college football is happening more and more. Pretty soon, they are going to disallow celebrations in the endzone too…..HEY! wait a second….
  • After changing the rules stating you couldn’t be an active coach to be inducted into the college football Hall of Fame, two legendary coaches are about to be added. Joe Paterno and Bobby Bowden, arguably the biggest names in all of college football will soon have a special place in The Hall. Congrats to those guys, they deserve it.
  • Who would have thought of golf as a dangerous sport? Well, certainly not me, but playing on the perimeter of an active volcano sure does take you in that direction, doesn’t it?
  • 713. 713. 713. I’m so tired of talking about this number, I don’t know what to do. If Barry Bonds doesn’t soon hit that next homer, I’m going to cram celery sticks in my ears so I don’t have to hear every pundit talking about it on the radio, the newspaper, the corner barbershop…..He IS going to hit it and he ISN’T being given a hard time because of race, but because he is a JERK.
  • Yankees match their own record tonight for the largest comeback win in NY Yankee history. They started off the game down 9 runs after two innings, but prevailed on a 2-run HR in the ninth inning by Jorge Posada.
  • The Cleveland Cavaliers team attended the funeral of Justin Hughes, the brother of their teammate Larry Hughes. In hard times, having those close to you to lean on helps you get through. This shows what kind of “atmosphere” exists with this young team, that they are more a family than team. Once again, our prayers go out to the Hughes family.

StonecoldJZ Back from Vegas

Monte Carlo Poker Tournament
I have been in Sin City for the last five days so I apologize for the lack of posts on my part.  I would like to say thanks to Wolfman for keeping the great sports info rollin on the Underground.  I personally realized during my trip to Vegas Vegas Vegas that I’m not ready to be a professional player yet, but that I’m light years better than I was the last time I went.  I finished 2nd in a tourney at the Monte Carlo (pictured above) and did rather well in a few limit cash games.  I will make the WPT or WSOP within the next three years and I hope to be professional by 2015 tops.  Anyway, I’m back!

  • Former McDonald’s All American Eric Boateng is transferring from Duke to Arizona State. This is a huge first get for Herb Sendek, who also transferred from the ACC (NC State) to Arizona State a little over a month ago.
  • Hey Rasheed, did you mean TONIGHT’s game when you guaranteed a win over the Cleveland Cavaliers? Nah, I didn’t think so.
  • Former Virginia Tech QB and general troublemaker/finder Marcus Vick has signed a contract with the Miami Dolphins. What the heck would make the Dolphins, already burned by Ricky Williams, take another chance on someone like this? I know everyone deserves a second chance, but with Vick, we’re on, like…….6 or 7!
  • Doug Flutie, 21 year veteran of professional football, is calling it quits. This is probably the first time in Flutie’s career that he actually has decided to quit. The ultimate warrior, he often overachieved and outperformed all the expectations people put on an undersized QB. He was never a superstar, or earned mega-money, but he holds a special place in all football fans hearts. Congrats on finishing one career, and starting another. Flute: An all around good guy.
  • Reggie Bush may be having an MRI on his hamstring and hasn’t been active yet in camps, but he has his mind set on being in camp on time and has told his agent specifically, NO HOLDOUTS. And I for one would like to add, AMEN!
