Sharapova Looking Sharp

Maria Sharapova the #2 SportsUnderground Sports Babe is looking like her old self in her first major of 2009 at the French Open. Sharapova was the number one women’s tennis player in 2005, but due to injuries and possibly a lack of focus she has fallen to her current rank of #102 in the world. Coming into the French Open Sharapova had only played 3 matches all year, but she seems to have shaken off the rust at Roland-Garros over the last week. Maria has beaten two players ranked in the top 25 in the world and has advanced to the quarterfinals to face 20th ranked Dominika Cibulkova. We would like nothing more than to see Sharapova win her second French Open title, but it won’t be easy because if she can get by Cibulkova then she will more than likely face Dinara Safina the number one women’s tennis player in the world.

The Cubs are 17-7 in their last 24 Sunday games and 6-2 recently after a win in the previous game. I think Sean Marshall and the Cubs get it done tonight in Wrigley. Take the Cubbies!

Simona Halep Just Broke My Heart

SportsUnderground Sports Babe Simona Halep as we have previously mentioned is an upcoming women’s tennis star who has all the potential in the world. That is all good and well, but there is news out now that Halep thinks her 34DD chest is holding back her tennis abilities. “This fall I’ll have a breast reduction operation,” Simona said. “The breasts make me uncomfortable when I play.” Those could be the two saddest sentences I have ever read back-to-back. Let’s hope Simona Halep comes to her senses and changes her mind on the possible reduction.

Why Would Someone Hurt Her?

Danielle Lloyd is the girlfriend of Tottenham (English Premier League) soccer player Jamie O’Hara and earlier this week she was thrown threw a glass table at a London night club. This might seem odd and out of sorts, but oddly enough this is the second time this has happend in the last month and the fourth time Danielle has been caught up in a vicious catfight. Two women were arrested in the most recent incident and are out on bail until July. It sounds to me like this girl really knows how to throw down. (no pun intended)

Lebron and the Cavs have their backs against the wall which would make you think they will come out fighting tonight in Cleveland. While I do think the Cavaliers will get a win tonight and take the series to Game 6 I do not think they cover the spread. Orlando seems to have the Cavs number and unless Cleveland’s inside game steps up this will be another close matchup. Take the Magic.

Barcelona Triunfos

Wednesday, May 27th

UEFA Champions League Final:

Barcelona Crowned Champions of Europe:

On the surface it had all the elements of a delicious match, including a plethora of tasty subplots. In the end it turned out to be a fitting game showcasing two of football’s legendary sides, Barcelona and Manchester United.

    The Questions:

Many pundits billed the game as a showdown between the world’s two best players: Manchester United’s brilliant, Portuguese superstar and current World Player of the Year, Cristiano Ronaldo and Barcelona’s diminutive, Argentine magician, Lionel Messi. Which of these two tremendous players would impose his will on the game?

Manchester United, reigning European Champion, was attempting to become the first team to win back-to-back Champions League titles in the history of the competition. Could the defending champions do what no other team previously accomplished?

Barcelona was attempting to achieve an elusive treble. Having already won their domestic, Spanish league championship and the annual Copa del Rey competition, was there enough gas in the tank for Barcelona to win the Champions League?

Legendary Barcelona player and current manager Pep Guardiola was a three-year-old when Sir Alex Ferguson began his coaching career. Could the Catalan’s first-year manager match wits with one of the games most brilliant tacticians?

Even at their best, Barcelona’s strength is not defending. With four regular defenders missing—either to injury or suspension—could Barcelona piece together a patchwork defense to blunt United’s potent attack?

Barcelona, while attacking well, looked defensively vulnerable and a bit frail against Chelsea in their Champions League semifinal. Only a miracle strike at the death by Spanish international Andres Iniesta secured Barcelona’s place in the championship game. Many, including Barcelona’s players and supporters, considered themselves fortunate to escape the Chelsea game. How would this play on the psyche of the Barcelona team and Pep Guardiola?

Entering the championship game Manchester United appeared to be the more balanced team: potent in the attack, solid throughout midfield and stout defensively. Would this balance trump what is the best attacking club football team in the world? In La Liga play alone, Samuel Eto’o, Messi and Thierry Henry combined to score an amazing 71 goals. And Barcelona’s goal differential in domestic league play was 70 goals. Their closest competitor, Real Madrid, had a goal differential of 32.

    My Prediction:

I believed the team scoring first would win. I thought if Barcelona scored first it would open the game, which suits Barcelona’s offensive style. If Manchester United scored first, I thought United could play a more tactical game and concentrate on defending, looking to catch Barcelona on quick counterattacks, an area in which Manchester United excels.

    The Game:

For the first 10 minutes of the game United was the hungrier of the teams, dominating play and controlling possession. Watching those initial minutes primed me for what appeared to be the pending “Ronaldo Show.” A blazing free-kick by Ronaldo befuddled Barcelona keeper, Victor Valdes, and Park Ji-sung narrowly missed shuffling the ball into the Barcelona net.

Ronaldo had several other close attempts, once dragging the ball just wide of the goal and a diving Valdes and again shooting wide from distance. In the first 15 minutes alone, Ronaldo had no less than five tries on goal. Had this pattern continued, United were sure to secure the first goal and take control of the game.
Against the early run of play, however, Cameroon international, Samuel Eto’o, took a perfectly weighted pass from Iniesta, cut inside of United defender, Nemanja Vidic, and then held off Michael Carrick as he pushed the ball with just enough pace to beat united keeper, Edwin van der Sar. Barcelona 1, Manchester United 0.
Suddenly buoyed by Eto’o’s goal, Barcelona seized control of the game. For the remainder of the first half and for the rest of the game, Barcelona held the lion’s share of possession.
Down a goal, United were unable to focus on a counterattacking strategy. In the second half Ferguson introduced Carlos Tevez, Dimitar Berbatov and Paul Scholes, hoping to generate a greater scoring threat, but Barcelona’s defense was up to the task. My Man of the Match, Barcelona captain, Carlos Puyol, was seemingly everywhere, supporting the attack and snuffing out United’s few chances.

Meanwhile, the slick, flowing passing for which Barcelona is known was evident all over the pitch. Whether it was Messi, Xavi or Iniesta creating opportunities, Barcelona outplayed United in every facet of the game. When Messi headed in a superb cross from Xavi at the seventy-minute mark, the game was all but over. Barcelona 2, Manchester United 0.
For a competition typically characterized by caution and conservative play, this match deviated from the norm. Congratulations to both Manchester United and Barcelona for presenting a game worthy of these two great sides.

Early commentary from pundits following the game had United not playing its best football. This may be so; however, United showed spirit and courage in playing attacking football. Barcelona deserves the championship and was clearly the better team. The Catalans took the game by the throat and executed a football clinic.

On their game, Barcelona plays—without a doubt—the most entertaining brand of football in the world. They play the game the way it should be played, the way most teams can only dream of playing. Yes, Barcelona play technically brilliant, flowing, attacking football, and they are the best club team in the world.

Congratulations, Barcelona! Viven de largo los campeones!

Two-Year Old Pool Shark

I know kids are starting younger and younger these days with honing their skills in sports, but this might be a little much. I have even heard of parents buying sperm from donor athletes so they can have the perfect specimen, but I don’t think most parents would be inteterested in acquiring a pool player’s sperm since most pool sharks aren’t the most healthy specimens around. Check out the video of a 23-month old hustla in the making showing off his uncanny pool skills.

NBA Bet of the Day – May 27th, 2009

The series is all knotted at up at 2-2 and tonight we are back in LA. The Lakers are 19-0 all-time in Game 5 of a 2-2 series so for that stat alone I’m taking them. I do also think the Lakers will actually hit the boards tonight and the home crowd should push them over the edge. Take the Lakers tonight!

LA Lakers -5.5

Lakers must get rid of the garbage to be the best…

The Los Angeles Lakers are said to have the best talent in the NBA, but I don’t know why people are saying this when they have stiffs like Lamar Odom, Luke Walton and Sasha Vujacic on their squad. As Charles Barkley would say, “these guys are Turrrrable.” Not to belabor the point but has anyone noticed that Derrick Fisher is old and can’t even shoot anymore?

The Lakers have only 4 players averaging over 10 points per game and with Lamar averaging only 11 points while sinking free throws at a 53% clip the big 4 is about as cheap as the Clippers top talent.

Sasha whose claim to fame is shooting from behind the arc is averaging a mere 37% from downtown and sadly enough this is actually much better than his 27% shooting from inside the arc. Vujacic is averaging a total of 3 points per game with 0 assists plus no free throw attempts other than a technical foul in Game 4 which he missed.

73920313LB007_Los_Angeles_LNow lets move on to Luke Walton because this guy is tanking his father’s legacy with every game he plays. Luke is averaging a mere 3 points per game, shooting 33%, grabbing a whopping 2 boards per game, and not even getting the free throw line on average once a game.

When only 3 of your starters are averaging 10 points or more a game and the bench is not producing then it is no wonder why Kobe is taking more shots and there is dissention among the team around ball distribution.

The key to Game 5 is easy if the Lakers will rebound plus Fisher and BYNUM come to play. Can anyone wake up this immature fool? Andrew Bynum was considered at one time this year a potential All-Star until a freak accident left him hobbled for most of the second half of the season, but c’mon. He is letting Chris ‘Bird Man’ Anderson and Nene kick his butt up and down the court.

If the Lakers don’t win the rebound edge tonight then it is game over and series over. Hope you have a nice day on the golf course with Lebron boys.

Mr. T Sings Take Me Out To The Ball Game

Recently we provided video of Denise Richards trying to sing Take Me Out To The Ball Game during the seventh-inning stretch staple offered at Wrigley Field. Well, last night Mr. T had the honor or throwing out the first pitch and also getting a shot to sing the Wrigley Field classic and it was as brutal as you would imagine. I do have to admit that when Mr. T stated, “I pity the Pirates Grrr,” I was amused.

One other quick point. I know the recession has been hard on all of us, but you know it is bad when Mr. T has to drop his gold. 😉
