Four-time Pro Bowl linebacker Joey Porter recently signed a $17.5 million dollar deal with the Arizona Cardinals that could potentially come close to $24.5 million if he is able to hit escalation clauses. Things couldn’t have been going better for Joey until he ran into a little issue late last week with the California Highway Patrol. Porter was arrested in Cali and was potentially facing three misdemeanors that included: assaulting a peace officer, resisting arrest and DUI. The CHP launched an investigation into accusations of Porter allegedly slapping an officer’s hand during the stop last week while he reportedly smelled like a brewery in a Taco Bell parking lot. Well, just when you think Joey could be in deep shihite news has been announced today that he won’t be charged with anything! Things that make you go hmmm.

Could Kentucky Take a Major Tumble?
Things have been very exciting over the last few months in the state of Kentucky, but that all came crashing down Saturday night when the Wildcats were upset by West Virginia. Yes, DeMarcus Cousins and John Wall both made first team All-American, but they are off to the NBA along with Patrick Patterson and freshman shooting guard Eric Bledsoe. Many NBA general managers think all four could end up as a lottery pick with Wall and Cousins going in the first and second picks of the 2010 NBA draft. Couple the potential loss of these four phenomenal starters along with the possibility of losing 6-10 forward Daniel Orton to the pros and there is a major depletion of talent in Lexington. Calipari is one whale of a recruiter and I don’t doubt he will land some big names (C.J Leslie, Josh Selby, Brandon Knight, etc.) before it’s all said and done, but can he reload in one year? Unless for some reason Bledsoe and Orton do return I predict the Wildcats will not be in the AP preseason top 10, but will make some noise in the weak SEC and then flame out in the NCAA tournament because they will even be less experienced than this year.

The Jets Hard Knocks
New York Jets, come on down. You’re the next contestant on HBO’s hit TV series “Hard Knocks.” The show reports on the day-to-day routine of NFL teams during the very busy season of training camp and shows a lot behind-the-scenes action. Coach Rex Ryan, GM Mike Tannenbaum and owner Woody Johnson announced the exciting news today at their training facility in Florham Park, New York during a scheduled press conference. The upcoming season promises to be a interesting to watch taking into account the colorful comments coach Ryan will surely share along with Bart Scott who is one of the biggest s*$# talkers in the league. Pile on Darrelle Revis the best cornerback in the NFL, future Hall of Famer LaDainian Tomlinson and rising star quarterback Mark Sanchez and you should have a very entertaining series. Typically NFL teams tank the season they are on the show, but last year the Bengals bucked the trend and made the NFL playoffs after participating in “Hard Knocks.” I know the Jets expect to do even more because they have aspirations of making it all the way to the Super Bowl this coming year.

Dwight Gooden Doesn’t Get It
Doc Gooden has been arrested AGAIN and the list of charges from this latest arrest isn’t pretty at all. Yesterday morning the former Mets and Yankees (don’t forget about Rays, Indians, and Astros) pitcher was in a car crash with a kid in his car and unfortunately Gooden was under the influence of drugs. The list of charges looks more like a grocery list due to the length, but here we go: Failure to Keep Right, Reckless Driving, Failure to Notify Change of Address Regarding Driver’s License, Leaving the Scene of a Motor Vehicle Accident, Driving While Under the Influence of Drugs, DWI with a Child Passenger, Endangering the Welfare of a Child, and Being Under the Influence of a Controlled Dangerous Substance. Does anyone want to bet the substance was a little snowflake?

Mauer is Officially Set, Are the Twins?
Minnesota Twins fans are basking in the glory of the Joe Mauer signing right now, but even as loved as he is in Minnesota should they really be so happy? Mauer’s contract extension is completely ludicrous ($184 million for 8-years) for a mid-market team even if he continues to play at the very high level he has displayed to date. The new Target Field will inevitably bolster their financial situation, but can they really continue to put enough talented players around Mauer to actually contend for a title? Minnesota’s payroll for this season will be around $97 million which is a $30 million jump from just last year. Things really start to get out of control next year when the Twins will have over $70 million sunk in just a mere eight players. How in the world do you fill out a complete roster without drastically increasing your payroll to a dangerous level? Mauer is fantastic and barring an injury he will only get better, but the jury is still out on whether this will be a good move fore the Twins in the end.
